My Why

When I first wrote a blog nearly seven years ago I had no idea how much I would love it.
Unlike writing my university assignments at the time, I really enjoyed writing those blog posts. I’d never thought much about writing beyond the essays and reports I had to do as a student but having an opportunity to write what I wanted and when I wanted was something entirely different.
I loved sharing my experience and little life lessons along the way. Those blog posts ignited a passion in me for writing.
As you probably know I started “blogging” because I was going abroad on a student exchange, and I was given the opportunity to have my experience published online.
When I finished that exchange and transitioned into being a real-life adult (or at least trying to be) I realised I missed writing, so I started up this very website.
But since then I’ve been somewhat inconsistent with my writing and have only sporadically posted. This is partly due to life getting in the way (and having to work for a living), partly due to not always having a lot to say (surprising, I know), and partly because I didn’t always feel like there was a “purpose” to my blogging and my website.

So what’s changed? Why start writing with some consistency now, after all this time?
It really started when we were in quarantine after arriving in New Zealand in December last year, and a couple of friends said they couldn’t wait to read my blog about the experience. At the same time I had also been asked to write a book review for the magazine of a professional body. I hadn’t intended to blog about the quarantine experience but as you can imagine, 14 days in quarantine = plenty of time on my hands. So while I sat at our hotel room desk, brainstorming ideas and typing away on my laptop, I remembered how much I enjoyed writing.
That little spark inside me suddenly got a whole lot brighter.
Then, as we campervanned our way around NZ in January I had more time to think more about my writing and what I wanted to do with it. I realised that the “purpose” to my writing was simple: I loved it. And when you find something you love, something you enjoy, you should bloody well make the most of it.
I love putting my thoughts down on paper and being creative with words, and because it’s the 21st century I like that I can share my thoughts and experiences with anyone who wants to read about it. When I learn a lesson, I don’t see the point in keeping it to myself when it might help someone else too. So why not, why shouldn’t I do something that I enjoy?

As an added bonus I also hope my writing will brighten someone’s day. Whenever I write and publish a blog post, my only hope is that it will bring a smile to someone’s face, brighten their day or give them some food for thought.
I'll also let you in on a little secret: I’ve set myself a writing-related goal (which I will share on here when I’m brave enough to) and as I strive to reach that goal I want to be a better writer. How do you get better at something? You practise it.
I’m not sure exactly what my writing will look like for the rest of the year, although I have a few ideas for new pieces. But now that I’ve explained why I’m back to filling your social media with regular blog posts, I feel like I can get on and do what I love: write.
I’ve always felt so lucky to have such lovely feedback and support from those that do read my posts, so thank you for taking the time. I hope I can repay your kindness with some interesting reading this year.
